A young woman, Topora Maewa Ames, 32, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., to-day, on a charge of attempting with menaces to obtain £8 from Mona E. McArdle, of the Packakariki Hotel, with intent to steal itCounsel said accused intended to plead guilty, and submitted that the case could be dealt with summarily. He suggested that there was outeide pressure on the accused to do what ehe did. Mr. Stilwell said the case could be easily distinguished from one a magistrate had power to deal with. There were menaces and the public had to be protected. 'He refused to take the course suggested.
