MEAT EXPORT.
OFFICIAL FIGURES.
MUTTON AND LAMB
BKLOW THE OTTAWA BASIS (By Tclcfrapli.— rarlianipntnry Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The latest official figures were quoted last, night by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Macmillan, in support of his emphatic contradiction of the published cable statement that Xcw Zealand had exceeded the Ottawa estimates in meat exports to the United Kingdom, particularly in respect of mutton and lamb.
"The Ottawa figures," said the Minister, "are bused on imports into Great Britain from the 12 months from July 1, 1031, to June ."JO, 1932, and so far as Xcw Zealand mutton and lamb are concerned these amounted to 19.},41S tons. From July I, 1932, to June 30, 1933— the 12 months following the 'Ottawa year'—New Zealand arrivals of mutton and lamb to the United Kingdom amounted to 185,G92 tons; and from July 1, 1933, to April 30, 1934—a period of ten months —they amounted to 141,0(i!) tons. 'The arrivals during the two months of May and June of tliis year are estimated to be not more than 43,000 tout?, possibly less, making a tonnage of mutton and lamb for the 12 months of 181,000, compared with the 'Ottawa year' tonnage of 195,415, a decrease of 11,400 tons."
Mr. Macmillan said it was true that certain other classes of. meat exports had exceeded the Ottawa figuree, but it was a serious mis-statement of fact to say that mutton and lamb exports had increased since the period on which the Ottawa figures were based.
