RARE BIRD.

ARCTIC WANDERER.

DISCOVERED AT HASTINGS

TWO PREVIOUS SPECIMENS

A strange bird, which was found at Hastings and sent to the Auckland War Memorial Museum, lias been identified hy Mr. R. A. Falla, ornithologist ori the Museum stair, as a red phalarope. It is a wanderer from the Arctic, and the third specimen found in New Zealand. The bird is a rich chestnut red in colour and about half the size of the godwit. Its native homo is Siberia and

Alaska, and as its feet are half-webbed it is able to spend much of its time at sea. It belongs to the wader type and is also known as the sea snipe. The specimen examined by; Mr. Falla was in full nesting plumage. The two previous specimens of the red phalarope were both found in Canterbury, the first in 1883.
