UNEMPLOYED TALLY.
POSITION MUCH IMPROVED. SELF-SUPPORTING JOBS. (By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Figures released to-day by the Unemployment Board giving the total numbers of men who are a charge on the board reveal a substantial reduction compared with the. previous month. The figures are as follow: At May 12, 00,213; at June 9, 57,234—a reduction of 2079. This fall in numbers has taken place practically in midwinter, while at the corresponding period of last year the numbers were rapidly increasing, and G7,116 were then receiving assistance from the fund. This discloses a drop for the 12 months of nearly 10,000, and is approximately 18,000 below the highest peak recorded, which was on September 30, 1933, when the numbers stood at 75,134. It is not possible to say definitely what has been responsible for this reduction, but indications point to the fact that the numbers receiving assistance under the board's No. 10 building scheme have been materially reduced without adding to the registrations from this source. Moreover, many who were receiving assistance as farm workers have now been absorbed by farmers giving them full-time employment at their own expense. In addition, many unemployed who were assisted to carry out prospecting operations are now winning sufficient gold to sustain themselves and to be independent of relief.
