PORT APPROACH.
EARLY SOUNDINGS WANTED.
RESURVEY IN 1930.
As _ was mentioned yesterday, an Iniperial surveying ship is likely to commence the long-wanted resurvey of the New Zealand coast towards the end of 1936. Advice to this effect was received by the Auckland Harbour Board at its meeting yesterday. In his letter to the Auckland Harbour Board conveying this information, the Minister of Marine, the Hon. C. J. Cobbe, said that the urgency of the work, as urged by the board, was appreciated and the provision of funds to meet the expenditure would be brought up for consideration by Parliament at an appropriate date. The Imperial Government, it was stated, would find the greater part of the cost. - Mr. E. H. Davis said that although the Minister's reply was not unsatisfactory it did not meet the urgency of the case. It meant that nothing \vould be done for two years. The point he had stressed before the board recently was the need of soundings in the vicinity of Great Barrier and Cuvier Islands, and he gave the opinion that the Government steamer Matai, in two weeks, could take all the soundings required for navigation. The work was necessary, as it was known that in some instances the information on existing charts was incorrect. On the motion of Mr. Davis the matter was referred to the board in committee and the harbourmaster, Captain H. H. Sergeant, was asked to report of the subject.
