WASHED OUT.
RELIEF WORKERS' ".PLIGHT. MURIWAI CREEK OVERFLOWS. The rapid rising of the Muriwai Creek last night flooded a relief workers' camp. The tents were abandoned at once, and there was a trek for safety, the men assisting the women and helping to carry the children, who found sanctuary for the rest of . the night at the cable shed 011 the beach. Some of the single men had to strike out for Huapai, 13 miles away, which they reached after a tedious journey. One of the number was an ex-service-man, and holder of the V.C. The flood came into the "camp so quickly that nothing could be done to save belongings, and when daylight came salvage on a general scale was commenced. It is considered that the water had banked up behind the sandhills until it burst through. "We were very near swimming," said one of the men this morning. "The water surged into our tents, and we found ourselves waist deep in it before we realised what had happened,"
