FARM' HAND'S OFFENCE. MACHINE MUCH' DAMAGED. The theft of a motor cycle valued at £27 10/, the property of Digby Cayley Alexander, was admitted by Richard John Cairtell, aged 25, a labourer, who appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Senior Detective Hall -said that accused had been employed by complainant on his farm at On April 9 he went to a shed, took the motor cycle, and left the farm. He rode about on the cycle for some time, finally abandoning the machine near Opotiki about May 7. ■ The cycle had been rather badly damaged, and the expenditure of over £14 would be necessary to put it in order again. It was because of the damage that accused was charged with the theft of the machine and not with the conversion of it. When questioned, the detective said, accused had given the police every assistance. He had three previous convictions for theft and was at present serving a sentence of two months. The magistrate imposed a sentence of six months' imprisonment, to take effect at the expiration of accused's present sentence.
