MANUKAU COUNTY.
Rates for the current year were struck by the Manukau County Council yesterday. These are estimated to produce the same revenue as last year and are based on valuations reduced by 25 per cent for rating purposes. The general rates in the six ridings are as follow:—Turanga l%d, Wairoa 1 43-64 d, Mangere 1 3-32 d, Papakura 1 l-64d, Papatoetoe 15-16 d, Pakuranga %d. The hospital rate is 11-32 d and there are also various special loan interest rates. A report was submitted in reference to tenders for the construction of the Maungaroa Bridge on the boundary of the Pakuranga and Turanga ridings. The lowest, submitted by Mr. H. Bellam, for £3445, was selected, subject to approval of the Main Highways Board. Approval was being awaited. The highest tender was £5530. The engineer reported that 301 men were on relief works throughout the county. The filtration plant for the Mangere water supply was practically completed, having reached the testing stage.
The council's levy to the Auckland Hospital Board was reported to be £5310, as against £5377 last year.
