BAN SUGGESTED.

SHEEP FARMERS' COWS FACTOR IN BUTTER PRICES. FREE TRADE CONTROVERSY. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)' DUNEDIN, this day. The suggestion that every sheep farmer with more than 1000 sheep should he prohibited from selling dairy produce was made at a meeting of the Farmers' Union. Mr. Lee remarked that' it was the sheepmen who had helped to bring the dairy farmer to his present position. (Murmurs of disagreement.) "I say so deliberately," he continued, "and I do not blame them for it." It was in order to improve their position that some of them took to dairying." Mr. Lee expressed the opinion that, taking into consideration the circumstances—long storage, etc. —the quality of the Dominion's produce was second to none. He was in favour of free trade, but knew they could not have it at present. If it were not introduced gradually it would cause untold misery. The only way out at the moment was to reduce tariffs. Mr. J. C. Inder said they could not but expect that Britain would impose some quota. Their only hope was to reciprocate by buying British goods. They must also send nothing Home but first-rate produce. Mr. R. J. Smith said he was in full accord with free trade with the United 'Kingdom. He was a sheep farmer, and he had come to the conclusion that the sheep farmer must do something fo'r the dairy farmer. He would go so far as to say that the sheep farmer with over |000 sheep should be prohibited from • filing dairy produce, .„ . >.. - \.
