SALARY CUTS.

REVISION NEXT MONTH. HOSPITAL BOARD'S DECISION. Declining to accept as final the advice of the Director-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, that no salary reductions should be restored, the Auckland Hospital Board decided on Tuesday to hold a special meeting next month to consider the revision of salaries from £300 downward. In a circular to all boards, Dr. Watt stated that in view of the present financial position no increase in the estimates for the year for the purpose of restoring salary cuts would be agreed to.

The chairman of the board, _Mr.- W. Wallace, said that the official view was that, if the Government agreed to the restoration of salary cuts by hospital boards, it could not withhold the restoration of cuts to civil servants. The board regularly revised salaries in j April. Apart "from the annual increases to nurses, no increases had been granted to the staff during the' past vear, and many of the lower-paid members were on the breadline. Mr. W. K. Howitt suggested that some of the seniors should also get a trencroue as some of them were getting a miserable though they carried heavy responsibilities. The chairman eaid that his idea in naming a- limit was that they would not be acting contrary to the Department's instructions.
