DANGEROUS WEAPONS.
Means of Retaliation Against Ship Subsidies. LORD STONEHAVEN'S VIEW. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 21. Lord Stonehaven was re-elected president of the Institution of Naval Architects. He declared that though the normal effect of shipping subsidies was stagnation and deadlock, tlic dangerous weapons sometimes needed in commercial as in other forms of warfare must be employed to retaliate for subsidies elsewhere. He added that improvement in design had justified the replacement policy on economic grounds. The cost of transport within the Empire could be reduced by half the 1914 level if the tramp steamer was allowed to develop.
TWO MONOPLANES. MAY BE FOR MELBOURNE RACE (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON", March 21. The British Klemm Company lias been commissioned to build two monoplanes with a speed of 170 miles an hour. It has not been revealed whether the aeroplanes are for entrants for the Melbourne centenary air race. HEAVY RAINFALLS. DELUGE AFTER DRAUGHT. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 21.
"After draught comes deluge." Rainfall in London for March created a record for 14 years, and heavy falls are reported from all parts of Britain. Most parts of the country have had only one clay without rain since March 9. LIGHT 'PLANE CLUBS. STATE ASSISTANCE SOUGHT. RUGBY, March 21. During tho discussion on tile Air Estimates in the House of Commons the subject of civil aviation was raised and a request was made for greater financial support from tho Government fox* light aeroplane clubs. The Under-Secretary for Air, Sir Philip Sassoon, said he sympathised with the movement and the Air Ministry was anxious to see civil aviation further developed. It was sufiiciently satisfied with the progress of tho light aeroplane movement, and had decided I upon its action.
Two new air services, one from London to Glasgow, aiul one from London to Plymouth, were started from Croydon on Monday. • %
