McMASTER VICTORIOUS

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. CENTRE BOWLING TOURNEY. LANCASTER FAILS IN FINAL. The well-known champion of the Stanley Bowling Club, Roy McMaster, who has won the singles title of his own club on numerous occasions, succeeded in following it up by winning the champion of champions of the Auckland Bowling Centre yesterday afternoon for the first time, thereby annexing a title which the president of the centre, Mr. Raymond Sheath, described as the "golden crown" of Auckland bowling, during his congratulatory speech while presenting the j winning cup. •; The victory will seem all the more meritorious to bowlers throughout the Dominion from the fact that in the final it involved the defeat of W. A. Lancaster, the champion of Carlton, generally regarded as the strongest club in New Zealand, and Lancaster himself had already consolidated the fine reputation which he brought from Wellington and Wanganui, by winning the Christmas tournament of the Auckland Centre fifteen months ago. These two were the only survivors of the 28 club champions who had assembled on the previous morning, so full of hope, and even they had each sustained one loss on Tuesday, the Pukekohe representative, W. J. Short, having defeated McMaster in the second round, and Lancaster in the fourth round. It was the irony of fate that Short should have to meet them both again yesterday, and this time they turned the tables on him, thereby reaching the final. Lancaster won the first head by a beautiful trail for one, when two down, and added another with his last bowl, McMaster winning the next by drawing the shot when he was three down, and the third by getting inside rather a ragged head. Lancaster burned the fourth when two down, and on the replay pushed in a short wood with his last bowl. The next few heads were equally in doubt until the last bowl was played, and a large bank of spectators had plenty to think about, and to talk about also, in anticipating, and afterwards commenting on the strategy adopted. Three drawn shots on the sixth head gave McMaster a lead which he retained until the end, and his position was only threatened on the fourteenth head, when he missed a run and left Lancaster the whole four, making the latter 11 to 14. The deciding head was the seventeenth, when McMaster was on the jack, and 1 Lancaster hit the toucher with a firm 1 run. Instead of going outside the rinlr the toucher knocked out Lancaster' 6 second shot for three, and in the next bead Lancaster missed a resting shot, to leave McMaster three more, and make the score 21 to 12. Lancaster was playing almost as steadily as his younger opponent, but he j missed a good opportunity to trail the jack or push out McMaster's bowl for four ; on the nineteenth, and this left him the i virtually impossible task of getting seven < iii two heads for a tie. McMaster naturally mixed the bowls on the next head for safety, and allowed Lancaster to hold the shot, for this gave him a win by 21 to 15. receiving an ovation from *lic large assembly. 1 After the result was posted up it was 1 found that Lancaster had promoted an opposing wood with his last bowl, so the j official score is 22 to 14, with one head ] not played. I

Although the margin seems rather sub--1 stantial, the contest was really a very close one, for Lancaster had by no means "dropped hia bundle," like so many had done in the earlier rounds of the day, and it required all the strategy and steadiness of the Stanley champion to achieve at last what was probably the height of his ambition in bowls. Naturally, Mc- ' Master was inundated with congratulations, all the more hearty on account of the excellent defence put up by the champion of Carlton. Complete results of Wednesday's play:— Sixth Round. R. McMaster (Stanley), a bye. W. J. Short (Pukekohe) 22, beat A. Moon (Te Papapa) 13. W. A. Lancaster (Carlton) 24, beat W. Bremner (West End) 14.
