THE OPENING DAY.

CUP TO SILVER RING. BURNISH WINS STAKES. Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMER STOX X., Wednesday. Silver Ring scored a brilliant win in the Awapuni Cup, this being his sixth succes: sive victory this season. The time,. 2.5, has only twice been bettered in the 20 years' history of the race. In tlio Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes, Mr. G. M. Curric's filly Burnish led all tlie way, the hot favourite Variant just failing to catch her in the last stride. There was a great surprise in the J. M. Johnston Memorial Handicap, -when Good Hunting and Cullus, the outsiders of the field of six, ran a dead-heat for first, with the favourite Copyist only a neck away third. The Awapuni trainer Mrs. A. W. McDonald started three horses in the Karere Hurdles, and they ran first, second and third. Mrs. McDonald also" trains Dombey, winner of the Autumn Plate.

The single pool betting system was used, witli three dividend's in fields of nine or more. Investments, amounted to £9492 10/, compared with £11,277 10/ under the win and place system on the first day last year, *a, decrease of
