INTERESTING CEREMONY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
ROTORUA, Tuesday.
An interesting ceremony took place on Sunday at Ruatahuna, in the Urewera country, on the Lake WaikareRotorua road, •when fully 250 Maoris and pakehas assembled to take part in the opening of the new Presbyterian Church. The opening ceremony was conducted by the Rev. D. D. Scott, assisted by the Rev. J. C. Laugliton (Taupo), Rev. Ilemi Potatau (Nuhaka), and Mr. J. A. L. Carter (Te Wliaite). Mr. Scott clioso "Thy Kingdom Come" for his sermon, and Mr. Laughton acted as interpreter. ' A Maori member of the Mothers League presented Mr. and Mrs. Scofcß with bouquets. At the mission house chiefs and other speakers expressed satisfaction with the work which had been accomplished in Ruataliuna, and made especially cordial reference to the services of Sister Annie, who had worked among the natives for the last 17 years. Valuable help had been given by Miss Monfries (Mrs. Gorrie), Miss Tweed, and the Rev. Laughton, the latter having erected the first mission house with palings. After the service a feast was provided for all.
The new church has been named Te Uinu Xi Taupo in association with the old occult knowledge of the Tuhoe people.
