GREAT SOUTH ROAD
RATEPAYERS' LOAN POLL.
PROPOSAL FOR SURFACING
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday.
At Monday's meeting of the Waipa County Council Mr. C. E. F. Peacocke inquired what was the position regarding taking a poll of ratepayers to raise a loan for surfacing the Great South Road. It was stated that plans had been forwarded to the Public Works Department at Hamilton, and amendments suggested had necessitated some alterations. Application had been made to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to take the poll. The work of preparing detailed plans for the full length of about 32 miles from one end of the county to the other was one of considerable magnitude, and naturally occupied the staff for a considerable time.
"Jnet what is the position?" inquired Mr. A. H. Storey. "I have, been told time after time that the council is responsible for the delay. Is that so?" ".No," replied the chairman. _ "We were advised that there wa3 no immediate possibility of the Highways Board making its subsidy available. But now I understand the prospects are better. A great deal of work has been done, providing for additional alignments and deviations of the present road. The County Council has not been delaying tho project." It was decided that the chairman and tho clerk proceed with arrangements for taking the poll immediately authority iis obtained from the Loans Board.
