PROPOSAL FOR DOBSON. EXTRACTION OF PILLAR COAL. ' (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. ■' -When .«epn to-day by a representative of the "Star" with regard to the future of the Dobson coal mine, Mr. R. B. Bell, chairman of directors of Orey Valley Collieries. Ltd., said that the work of scaling off the east section of the mine fwhere an explosion occurred on January 5) was commenced on Monday.

The work would cost well into four fijTiires, and would employ about 120 men—out of 170 previously employed— for several -weeks. At the end of that time, it was anticipated that coal, production woi7ld be resumed. The extractable quantity would be limited, however, by the fact that pillar working ,could Jiot be provided in future on the basis which it hag been in the past.

. In this connection the company's colliery manager had recommended a method of mininpr new to New Zealand, which he claimed would allow of tlie complete extraction of pillar coal with safety. This ' scheme was now under consideration by the directors, who were employing two eminent mining ennineers, a New Zealandcr and an Australian, to report on it.
