PITCHED BATTLE.
FOREIGNERS AND BRITISH.
WEST AUSTRALIAN RIOTS.
RIFLES, KNIVES AND BOMBS IN USE.
MOBS COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL.
Arising out of the death of the chief of the Kalgoorlie Volunteer Fire Brigade after a quarrel in a local hotel, racial rioting broke out in the West Australian mining centre which developed to tragic proportions yesterday, when open war was declared against the foreign section of the community, and a pitched battle ensued. It is reported that one foreigner has been killed and that a Britisher is dying from a knife wound in the stomach.
The police are hopelessly inadequate to control the situation, and mob violence has run amok. Firearms, knives and bombs are being used. Apart from the menacing conflicts that have taken place, incendiarism on a large scale has been resorted to, and it is stated that the damage to property caused on Monday was estimated at £50,000, but subsequent reports tell of further fires.
