SUSTENANCE MEN.
MOVE TO ORGANISE. PROTEST AT WELLINGTON. HIGHER KATES WANTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. "As a fust step to -organise themselves, the sustenance men held a wellattended meeting yesterday," states the chairman of the meeting, Mr. T. Kelly. Officials and an executive were appointed, and the following motion was carried unanimously: —
"That this mass meeting of sustenance men voice emphatic dissatisfaction of the Unemployment Board's policy of reduced money for those they cannot place in work. We are of the opinion that no discrimination should be made between men of different ages,- and that if it is necessary to place men on sustenance they should be given sustenance according to the Unemployment Act of 1930, namely, £1 1/ for a male, 17/6 for his wife, and 4/ for each child. Further, we strongly object to the authorities deducting from the sustenance payment the 5/ levy, plus 6<l fine, and'demand that the levy be abolished."
A . request from the United Front Council of Action, asking for two delegates, was complied with, and a speaker was appointed for a meeting next week. A recommendation to the Council of Action that a public meeting be held in the Basin Reserve on Sunday, January 21, was adopted.
