SURF LIFE-SAVING.
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. BROWN'S BAY CARNIVAL. The first two-day surf life-saving carnival ever staged in New Zealand will take place at Brown's Bay next week-end. The carnival Is being run in conjunction with the "Back to Shore Week." Chief interest will be centred on the Speedo Shield and Lovell trophy competitions, and with the shield goes the provincial championship honours. Taking the form of a four-man alarm, will be the event for the special trophy donated by Mr. A. Lovell, of Brown's Bay. Commencing on Saturday afternoon will be the competition for the special trophy. This event should bring record entries and the cream of Auckland swimmers, as it will see J. Enwright, E. Stevens, Pat Shanahan and Bob Buchanan pitted against those experienced surf men, C. J. Sidford, N. Galbraith and A. Briggs. On Sunday evening there will be a special floodlight display, the beach being floodlighted for the occasion. The judges for the carnival will be: Mr. K. Reid, the physical instructor of the Auckland Training College, who is chairman of the Auckland Surf Association; Mr. H. S. Congdon, for many years captain of Cronulla Club, Australia, and Mr. AVally Gordon, former instructor Castlecliff Club, Wanganui, now instructor of Waitemata Club. . ■ On Anniversary week-end a number of teams from the various city clubs will journey down to Tauranga, where the Mount Maunganui Club intend to have a carnival. An excellent programme has been arranged, including both water and beach events.
