BURNT ALIVE.

FIVE ELEPHANTS AT ZOO. PARIS, January 6. Five valuable elephants were burnt alive at Vincennes Zoo. The fire is believed to have been clue to a live coal having fallen from a neighbouring hut and ignited the straw, which set fire to the stable. This stable was built entirely of wood and thatch, and the elephants were chained inside during the night. A keeper heard the wild trumpetings of the elephants when they were struggling to escape, but the flames prevented any attempt at rescue. The building was destroyed and the animals were dead when the brigades arrived.
