Somerset's oldest woman, Mrs. Emma Coate, of North Curry, celebrated lier 103 rd birthday recently. Maesteg (Glam.) Council is co-operating with trade unions and other organisations for the purpose of raising funds to provide a memorial to the late Mr. Vernon Hartshorn, H.P., the first Labour PostmasterGeneral. A sailor named Darnell fell overboard at the South Jetties, Cork. He was in danger of being crushed between the vessel and the quay wall when he was rescued. A plague of adders has attacked the village of C'astleside. near Consett. Durham, and several animals have been bitten, including a dog, cow and sheep. The dog has died. Royal congratulations were received by Mrs. Mary Ann Dibble, of West Bronipton, near Minehead, who reached the age of 100 years. Workmen engaged in excavation at Addington, Village Road. Addington, near Croydon, unearthed several human bones, sa'd to be some hundred years oi'J. Under detention in the guard room at Aldershot, Private S. V. Thompson of the Duke of Wellington Regiment, disappeared. Police arc searching" for him.
