AUSTRALIA BEATS BRITAIN.

QUIST STILL VICTORIOUS. VISITORS FINISH STRONGLY. BRISBANE, December 23. In the lawn tennis Test Britain made a better showing against Australia to-day, winning three out of the four concluding rubbers. Australia won the Test decisively, however, taking eight out of the twelve rubbers played in. the last three days. England halved the honours in doubles pJay. eauh country scoring two matches. In the singles, however, the tally was six to two in Australia's favour, Wilde's victory over Moon on the second day, and Perry's over Hopman on the third, being the only successes of the Britishers. To-day'a results: — Singles.—Quist (Australia) beat Hughes (Britain), 6—4, Perry (Britain) beat Hopman (Australia), 6 — i, 6—3. Doubles.—Perry and Lee (Britain) beat Quist and McGrath (Australia). 5—7, 6—4, B—o, 9—7: Hughes and AVilde (Britain) beat Hopman and Moon (Australia), 5—7, o—4, o—l, 3—o, o—l. Compared with the first two days it was a day of disappointment for the spectators for the tennis rarely rose to great heights.

Quist again showed his great improvement by outplaying Hughes at the baseline and killing effectively wheii ho advanced, to the net. It was the" best match of the day. Advertised as the star turn, the HopmanPerry match fell much below expectations, the Australian playrng far short of his best and Perry only well enough to win with ease. He was not extended. Quist and McGrath met a better pair on the day. Perry's placements and Lee's speed on the forehand found the Australians' weak spots, though McGrath's backhand shots and Quist's smashing gave the crowd some thrills. The final match of the Test finished in semi-darkness. Hughes and Wilde proved masters on the day of Hopman and Moon. Wilde was in brilliant form, making many uncanny recoveries and hitting many winners. Ho was ably supported by Hughes. Moon played well, but Hopman never revealed international form.
