TRADE WITH JAPAN.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE VIEW COMMITTEE DISCUSSION. Full committee discussion took place this morning at the council meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce regarding imports from Japan. The motion, as moved originallv by Mr. F. N. Ambler, read:—"That it is in the best interests of this country to buy as great a proportion of our imports from Britain as possible; the New Zealand Government be urged to place sufficient duty on goods of Japanese manufacture to enable British manufacturers to compete, and the chamber urges a specific duty in place of the ad valorem duty." The amendment, as finally adopted, was:—"That it is in the bes't interests of this country to buy as great a proportion of our imports as possible from Great Britain; that this resolution be forwarded to every chamber of commerce in New Zealand, and-that-they be asked to take the matter up with their respective councils." Mr. Ambler did not wish the matter to be taken in committee, but the importers' section thought it wise to go into committee.
