NATIVE LAND SETTLEMENT PROPOSALS
Before passing criticism on any proposals of public interest it is essential that the critic should have an intelligent knowledge of the subject upon which he is passing judgment. I am just afraid your correspondent "Houtaewa," in his criticism of the Te Kuiti Native Land Settlement Committee in Monday's "Star" ha's done himself an injustice, as the proposals he condemns are the panacea for the very ills he dreads. Your correspondent assumes {and rightly so) "the Te Kuiti committee has the lntere'sts of the Maori at heart; if so it will begin at another angle and assist its Maori brothers and sisters to be put in satisfactory occupation of their land." That is exactly what the scheme proposes. If your correspondent "Houtaewa" will furnish me with a more appropriate name than "'New Potato" I will be very pleased to supply him with full particulars of the proposals. GABRIEL ELLIOTT. Hon. Sec, Te Kuiti Native Land Settlement Committee.
