SENIOR B SECTION.

PROSPECTS OP TEAMS. Owing to the last opportunity for general practice being spoilt by rain andi through prospective members not putting in an appearance, club officials .were considerably hampered in trying to' finalise the teams to take the field on Saturday, and in many cases the\ personnel of elevens is by no means complete. North Shore, winners of last year's competition, should field a very strong team again, although .they have quite a number of vacancies to fill. Amongst the absentees will be Alex. Matthews and Or. Jay, while those offering their services include Yarnton, Cohen, Adams and Emery from, the Takapuna Grammar school; also some promising second graders. The two Smiths, Rawkin and Woolley are available, and they should form the nucleus of a team that should prove hard to beat. Parnell, who succeeded in heading the A section last season, will have practically the same side again, the only addition being Macmillan, a medium pacebowler 'from the lower grade. "Doc" Aitken, captain of last year's team, will be there to give his services again. Worth, McGeehan and Siddle will help to complete a strong side. Balmoral will feel the loss of Cleal, a capable bowler who will play for the Ponsonby senior team. He is the only notable defection, and his place is most likely to be filled by Righton, who has had a spell for a season or two. Therefore, Balmoral should again make their presence felt. ? Ponsonby side is still indefinite, but if they. can field something similar to last year in batting, and include a bowler to give V. Williams more support, their chances would be much brighter. Papatoetoe may lose a few of the older hands this season, and their places will have to be filled by the best of the second graders. Dr. Valentine, W. Kerr, E. Kerr, and White intend donning flannels again, while A. Winks is doubtful. Mount Albert have not entered a team this season, and their leading players will probably be sprinkled amongst the various teams. Stanley Bay have applied for Senior B status. They possess some promising talent with Vera. Scott outstanding. .Point Chevalier appear to have lost the Wallace brothers for good to Paraell. It is a big loss to them, but at the same time they have hopes of upsetting calculations. At the time of writing Eden. Grafton, King's Old Boys, Y.M.C.A. and University had not made any definite announcement.

OTAHUHU ASSOCIATION.

PENALTY FOR LATE STARTING. • The official opening of the Otahuhu Cricket Association's senior grade competition takes place next Saturday afternoon. The entry of nine teams necessitated one team having u- bye every Saturday. Appreciation was expressed at the management committee meeting when an otter was received from Air. F. W. Martin (the old Wellington and Wairarapa tenuis player), the master of the Otahuhu Junior High School, to provide a first-class team, comprised of scholars and masters, each Saturday to meet the bye team. The bat donated by the Auckland Cricket Association is to be awarded to the player with the best batting average during the season, the winner to have played in not less than 12 competition games. A further nomination of a team in the junior grade was received, making a total of five to date in this grade. It was decided that no player be eligible for play unless his registration is .in on Tuesday preceding the Saturday on which he desires to play. The transfer of two players was ruled out of order, as the necessary formalities had not been complied with. Two of last year's Railway seniors were rcgraded to juniors. Messrs. Clark, SifTlett and Holloway were appointed as a rcgrading committee. After a lengthy discussion it was decided that no competition games would be played on Labour Day, owing to the inability of one or two clubs to field a team. Mr.' W. Beck, on behalf of the Umpires' Association, brought forward several matters of interest which- the association decided to support. The principal item was thai; concerning the punctuality of teams taking the field. Games will commence at 2 p.m. sharp, and any team not on the ground by the appointed hour will be debited with a loss. The laxity by some teams in the past has not been in the interest of the game locally. Another matter that will be enforced is that players and umpires are not to smoke on the playing field. The draw and grounds for Saturday s games are: — Sturgess Park.—St. Joseph's v. Abattoirs (Messrs. Fielding and Jcrratt). Abattoirs No. I.—Passenger Transport v. Kempthorne's (Messrs. McDowell and Nicholson). Abattoirs No. 2.—Challenge v. Railway (Messrs. Smith and Kirkwood). Challenge. — Borough v. Hellaby s (Messrs. Hardy and Harrison). Junior High School.—Returned Soldiers v. Junior High School.
