COAL INDUSTRY

MEETING POSTPONED. A meeting of shareholders in the Wilton and Renown Coal Companies, which was to have been held this morning, was postponed at the last moment, much to the disappointment of a number of shareholders who had been led to expect that matters of considerable importance to those companies and to the coal trade generally would be discussed. Negotiations affecting the industry as a whole have been carried on between representatives of the various companies in recent weeks and this appears to have been the cause of the postponement. Mr. Hendry Luke, managing director of the newly-merged company —Wilton-Renown —stated that he was not in a position to give information in regard to these negotiations. He did wish to state, however, that he and his fellow directors were exceedingly sorry that it had been necessary to postpone the meeting, and to assure them that prior notice was impossible. It was not until 10 a.m. to-day that certain factors arose which made it inadvisable to meet the shareholders to-day. The directors themselves were in conference all the morning, and could not attend the Chamber of Commerce to make a personal explanation, but they deputed the manager of the Renown Company to do so, and he was in attendance. As soon as possible, added Mr. Luke, a further meeting would be called.
