WHAKATANE ROADS.

GRANTS FOR TAR-SEALING. SPIRITED DISCUSSION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. Considerable controversy has occurred of late in regard to the distribution of grants for tar-sealing in the county, following a traffic tally taken two months ago disclosing heavier traffic to Awakeri as compared with the Taneatua road. A spirited altercation ensued at a meeting of the County Council between east and west riding members yesterday. The council adopted the suggestion of Mr. H, VValkinson (Public Works Department) for two miles of the Taneatua road to be sealed, and also a suggestion that the section from Whakatane Bridge to Glen's store at Poroporo be sealed and that the balance of the loan which had been originally raised for tar-sealing on the WhakataneTaneatua road be expended on improvements to other main highways on the Rangitaiki Plains. This resolution finally settled all difficulties.
