DERATING.
FARMERS' UNION DISCUSSION. CRITICISM OF BOARD. The question of derating of farm lands was discussed at a meeting of the Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers' Union this morning, when it was stated that the majority of the county councils were in accord with the proposal. Mr. R. H. Feisst said there was no doubt that the petrol tax would easily cover the loss caused by derating. Mr. W. Boyd, referring to a letter from Mr. W. Morrison, of the Main Highways Board, said that he was obviously not sympathetic to derating, and viewed the position with a biased mind. Mr. H. 0. Mellsop declared that figures put forward by motorists were erroneous. They did not take into consideration rebates on petrol used for purposes other than motor traffic. Mr. Fcisst that the Main -Hi?hwavs Boa:u had paid £394,000 to the Consolidated Fund in 1932, thereby losing all its reserves. Mr. Boyd said that the question of derating must be made a political one, and pressure be brought to bear on the Government and local bodies.
