FACTORY ON FIRE.
DAMAGE IN CHRISTCHURCH
CONFECTIONERY PLANT LOST. (By Telegraph.—Press Association. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A fire of unknown origin destroyed a large part of the plant and premises of the Chivera Confectionery Company, Limited, at 24C, St. Aeaph Street, this evening. The building, which was of brick and wood, was the property of the estate of Elizabeth White. Nobody was in the building when the fire broke out, and everything appeared to be in or<Jer when the last employee left at 5.30 p.m. The alarm was given by a passer-by shortly after (i p.m., but the fire was then burning strongly. The highly inflammable contents fed the fire, i>o that it quickly increased in intensity. The greater part of the factory wae gutted, and most of the machinery was damaged beyond repair. The fire brigade suodued the outbreak quickly, but the rapid spread of the flames caueed considerable damage before they could,bo checked. The building was insured in the Norwieli Union Office, but the amount could not be ascertained tin's evening. The stock and plant were insured for £2000 with the Mercantile and General Insurance Company.
