LUMP SUM SUBSIDY.
TWO NEW BUILDINGS. POST OFFICE AMD STATION. NO. 1O SCHEME PUNBS. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Though, the contractor for the erection of the Dunedin Post Office was not prepared to restrict hours of working so as to secure the Unemployment Board's subsidy on wages, the Post and
Telegraph Department, as owner of the building, is going to get some advantage from the unemployment fund.
The object of the special building subsidy under the Xo. 10 scheme was to encourage the spending of capital on buildings, and this principle is being observed by the granting of a lump sum subsidy on the Duncdin Post Office contract. The amount bears close relation to the total estimated expenditure on wages lor the whole job, and should work out at about 8 per cent of the gross amount of the tender.
A similar method is being followed in connection with the Wellington railway station contract, tenders for which were opened last week and are now under consideration by the Railway Department, which will receive from the unemployment fund a lump sum payment based on the gross outlay on the building and probably totalling 8 per cent of that amount.
