LOCAL BODIES.
ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL,
A meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, presiding. Trafalgar Street Extension.—The Public Works Department is not prepared to rceommend the proposed extension of Trafalgar Street through the council's quarry section to Cardwell Street at less than the full width. The council decided to make the street 66ft wide to comply with the requirements of the Department.
Foreman's Report.—A report _ by the foreman on the method of engaging relief workers was adopted with slight modifications. The Unemployment Board is to be asked to consider it. The foreman also reported that t u e number of relief workers on the council's payroll had been reduced from COO to 525.
Te Papapa Beach.—A petition bearing 255 signatures was received from residents and ratepayers asking the council to improve the bathing facilities at the Te Papapa Beach. The petitioners said the beach wae visited by several thousand people List summer. Such works as the formation of paths, removal of outcrops of rock, erection of bathing sheds, etc., would provide suitable employment for relief workers.
Railway Carriage.—Permission to place a used railway carriage at the back of Coronation Hall, to be used as a kindergarten class room, was declined.
System of Rating.—The council will take a. vote at the next loan poll on the question of reverting to the system of rating on the annual value, instead of the present system of the unimproved value.
Balance of Loan.—The Secretary of the Treasury advised that the council could not proceed further in raising the balance of an unemployment loan of £4500 because the necessary legislative authority had expired in July last. The council protested against the attitude taken up by the Treasury in view of the fact that £3000 of the loan had already been raised, and all the neccssai'y formalities complied with. A copy of the letter was sent to the Prime Minister, who replied last night that the matter was under consideration.
Assessment Court.—As there is a considerable number of objections to the urban farm land list, an Assessement Court will consider them. Mr. J. B. Wallace was nominated as the council's representative on the Court. Donation.—A donation of £15 was made to the Onehunga District School Committee in celebration of the diamond jubilee.
