DRUNK IN CAR.
PLEA OF ILLNESS MADE.
GROCER FINED £20.
A grocer, Charles Horace Cornish, aged 43, appeared in the Police Court this morning on a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in his motor car in St. Luke's Road, Mount Albert, yesterday. • Cornish pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant O'Sullivan said Cornish was observed by a traffic inspector to drive past , the Mount Albert Borough Council office at 4.15 p.m. yesterday. He was seen to be lying over the steering-wheel, and he was followed and was found to be drunk enough for arrest on an ordinary charge of drunkenness. Counsel said no damage had been done. Cornish had been ill during the week, and had unfortunately taken one or two brandies yesterday. He was in an exhausted condition. Counsel suggested that Cornish's , driving license should be cancelled for two years, as his wife intended to sell the motor car. He was a man who rarely touched liquor. "If that is the case there is really no necessity to cancel the license for such a long period," said the magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean.
Cornish was fined £20 and his license was cancelled for twelve months.
