CHINA'S SORROW.
YELLOW RIVER FLOOD.
2000 Square Miles of Shantung
Inundated. SEVERAL TOWNS EVACUATED. (United P.A.-Eleetrlc Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 10 a.m.) PEKING, August 17. China's sorrow, the Yellow River, has flooded over 2000 square miles of the province of Shantung. A foreign expert, returning here from the scene of the disaster, reports that 1,500,000 people are affected, but the loss of life is small owing to ample warning.
Several towns have been completely evacuated by the populace, while at others, residents, including prisoners in gaols, have taken refuge behind medieval walls. Everywhere the dykes are being feverishly strengthened.
The gates of some cities have been barricaded with sandbags. The river is now falling.
