COMING BY-ELECTION.

INDEPENDENT NOMINEE.

A total of 2099 additional names has been added to the Lyttelton electoral roll in readiness for the by-election which is to be held on September 13 to fill the vacanacy caused by the death of Mr. J. McCombs. The rolls closed at 6 p.m. on Monday, and several persons who applied on Tuesday had to be refused enrolment. The grand total has not yet been prepared, as calculations have to be made for those electors who have transferred their residence to another district. The total number on the roll at the last general election was 12,625.

Mr. J. J. McGahey, returning officer, stated" that there waa a big total of removals from the electorate since the general election. The rush of applications for enrolments which took place on Monday, when the roll closed, had been responsible for nearly 1000 cardsbeing sent in. Many of these, however, were duplicates.

The nomination of Mr. Edward Leslie Hills, who is standing as an Independent Labour nominee, was lodged on Tuesday morning. This is the first nomination to be presented to the official quarter, although both Mrs. Ethel McCombs and Mr. F. W. Freeman have received endorsement as candidates from their respective forces, the Labour party and the Coalition party. Formalities in their cases will be complied with well before noon on August 28, when nominations close. . , The writ for the election was received by Mr. McGahey on Monday, and as polling day is not till September 13, the parties are not bustling themselves over the preliminary electioneering arrangements. ._ , Mr. F.
