OBITUARY.

CAVALIER F: G. SIACCI: 7 *

A well-known civil engineer, Cavalier Francis Giacinto Siacci died yesterday at Marine Parade, Heme Bay. lie was born in Turin, Italy, being the eldest son of General Siacci, ' a senator of Home, and also a prominent artillery officer. Tlie soil was educated at. the University of Rome, where he obtained the degree of B.Sc. He was also at the University of Bolonga. After holding various engineering appointments in Italy, Cavalier Siacci was appointed engineer on the Egyptian State Railways, and was afterwards

connected with various constructional enterprises in Egypt, including the erection of Shepherd's Hotel at Cairo. He came to New Zealand in 1918, and was consulted by the Christchurch Gity Council regarding the scheme for making a harbour at Port Sumner. In 1925 he visited the United States, prac tising his profession in San Francis-o for some time. Then he was in charge of town-planning at Chicago, but failing health caused him to retire, and he returned to New Zealand last year. In 1005 Cavalier Siacci was made a' Knight of the Crown in Italy. He was not married and had no relatives in New Zealand.

MR. JAMES R. MONTGOMERY.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. Mr. James R. Montgomery, who died at Christehureh, was for ten years on the staff of the Otago Boys' High School, before being appointed headmaster of the Geraldine District High School. Although he played cricket far Otago for several seasons, at one time being captain, his success in football was outstanding. He was a great forward and represented the province in the seasons 1888-89-90-91-92, and was captain in the last t>vo years. Mr. Montgomery was also captain of the University team in those two seasons. He was a notable rifle shot, being in 1890 champion shot of the Otago Rifle Association.
