A SMALL BOON.

• There is a story told of Lincoln that one day an ambitious seeker after office came to him to ask for an ambassadorship. "When this was refused, the applicant ran down the scale of Government appointments, but not even the lowliest was available. Finally he went away the 'richer by an old. pair of the President's trousers, which he accepted gratefully. The good people of Marlborough 'seem to have had a somewhat similar experience on the recent visit of the Minister of Public Works to their district. Their wants were many and varied, and they felt the time had come to ask for many things, from a £2,000,000 railway to new buildings for their College. The South Island Main Trunk railway seems to people in other parts to be as dead as the moa, but in Marlborough hope springs eternal. The Minister was not to be drawn into making rash promises, but the Blenhejm post office is now being painted. It is, of course, just possible that the Government had decided on this public work before the application was made for the railway and school, but Marlborough will find it pleasanter to think that its prayer was answered. .
