MANUKAU COUNTY.

FIRE PROTECTION PROPOSAL

The support of the Manukau County Council in urging the Government to bring down legislation giving the ValuerGeneral power to take three months option over properties offered to the Crown under section 45 of the Valuation of Land Act, 1925, and in requesting that the local authorities affected should' be given power to offer such properties for sale at the same price, was asked iby the New Lynn Borough Council in a letter which came before the county council at its meeting this morning. It was decided that as the matter had been discussed and a decision arrived at at the recent Counties Conference no further action should be taken. Fire Protection.—The Otahulju Borough Council advised that it was prepared to enter into an agreement giving fire protection to the extended portion ot Mangere riding, as per a plan submitted, for a period of five years at an inclusive subsidy of £75 per annum. Distress in Mangere.—The Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee forwarded a donation of £10 towards the relief of distress in the Mangere district, on the condition that the secretary of the Social Workers' -Association should be consulted before the money was distributed. The sum of £15 to be used for similar purpose was, received from the treasurer of the "Luck at Last art union. , _ . . Mangere Reserves.—The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that, as recommended by the council, the reserve at Mangere Bast would be added to the Mangere Domain, to be controlled by the Domain" Board. Relief Labour.—The engineer lreported that during the past month an average ot 382 men had been engaged on relief works throughout the county. Mangere Water -Supply.—The engineer further reported that no difficulty was being experienced with the new Mangere water supply scheme. Panmure Bridge.—lt was stated that repairs to the Panmure Bridge were proving a tedious work, but indications were that the results ,aimed at would be attained for the sum provided.
