AFFAIRS OF REFEREES

CHALLENGE ROUND CONDITIONS

The Auckland Rugby League Referees Association, with Mr. A. Ball presiding, met last evening, when the board of control advised that the challenge round would commence ae a curtain-raiser to all fixtures. The games will be of forty minutee' duration, with a change of ends at half-time and no spell. Immediately the bellgoes, the play must efcop, whether the ball is in play or not. No time ie to be allowed for injuries. A point will be given against the team deliberately forcing or kickins: into touch behind or out of bounds behind the goal. The games will etart at 1.45 p.m., 2.30 p.m. and 3.15 p.m. The City-Richmond match and the Richmond-Devonport reserve game, for the Roopo Rooeter and Stallard Cup final respectively, will count as first contests of the challenge round. The board asked for the- co-operation of referees and players to make the competition a success.

Mr. Mincham mentioned that the board had discussed the matter of more uniform rulings.

The chairman said this emphasised the need for a national conference on the subject. The hooking for Auckland on Saturday was also criticised, two speakers declaring that the method of going down on one knee t , ""* illegal. Mr. Bull stated there -would he no trouble if there was more insistence for a clear tunnel for the putting in of the ball. The culpability of the half-backs and outside forwards was also under notice, but it was decided that little could be done to alter matters without a lead from the New Zealand Referees' Association.

The grading committee submitted a lengthy list of reports on referees. Wednesday Matches (2, Victoria Park). —Mr. Stenerson. Linesmen for Carlaw Park. —No. 1 ground: Messrs. A. Saunders, G. McCowatt, P, Rogers and V. Simpson. No. 2: S. Billman and L. Dixon.

TJie West Coast team to represent the Southern League against South Auckland, at • Iluntly on Saturday, for the Northern Union Cup, is :—

The Coasters will leave Huntly for Auckland on Monday morning. They play Northland later next week, and appear" at Carlaw Park on August 26.
