SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The monthly meeting of Chapter Auckland, No. 236, Order of The Eastern Star, was held on Thursday at Renall Street, Ponsonby. After business was transacted the evening was spent in •social chats, dancing and supper.

The fifth annual meeting of the third Remuera branch of the League of Mothers was held last Thursday. Mrs. P. D. Wright, actingpresident, presided. The report • and financial statement showed a very satisfactory year's work, and the following, officers were elected: —President, Mrs. Hughes-Jones; vice-presidents, Mrs. P. D. The Grey Lynn Croquet Club held the seventh of a series of card afternoons at the Farmers' reception room last Wednesday, when Mrs. E. Moran thanked all for their patronage • and presented the prizes won by Mrs. H. Moran for bridge and Mrs. White for the hidden number. Mesdames. Bell, Norris and won the flag 500. A "hard up" ball, organised by the relief workers'of Brown's Bay,: was held •in - the Brown's Bay, Cabaret' on Wednesday. There was a large attendance of visitors from. Takapuna and the various bays. During the evening prizes for the best "hard up" costume were won by Miss Armitage and Mr. W. Armitage, of Takapuna, representing the Anti-depression Quartet. Prizes were given by Messrs. Hutchinson Bros, and the Farmers' Union. Novelty dances were the Monte Carlo, won by Mr. M. Kimber and Miss Armitage, and the spot waltz, Mr. B. Smith and partner.

A successful bridge and five hundred card evening was organised by the members of the house committee of the Catholic Women's League in their rooms on Thursday. The daffodils, jonquils, both yellow and white, and crimson rhododendrons, made the rooms most attractive. . Members of the committee present were Mesdames L. Scruby, T. Meyer, R. Jury, F. R. Rouch, Misses C. A. Bryant (convener), P. Flynn. Prizes were won by Miss M. Burke, highest bridge score; Mesdames M. Tho Thames Girls' Club held a reunion in the Druids' Hall on Tuesday. Items were contributed by Mesdamcs Andrews, L. Snowling, Misses Godkin and Smythe, Messrs. Godkin, Rees, and the Thames Girls' Glee Club. Competitions were won by Mesdames Fowler, McGeehan, Miss Gillespie, and Messrs. Wheeler and Rees. The committee members present were: Mesdames McGregor, president, Aitken, Davison, Taylor, Cordes, McPherson, McGeehan, Mclntyre, Stubbing, Gribble, Nicholls, Andrews, Habber, Misses Aitken, Gillespie and McGregor,

The clubrooms of the Garrick Dramatic Society were tastefully decorated with flowers when a reception was held on Wednesday evening after the presentation of "The Second Mrs. Tanqueray," at Lewis Eady's Hall. Supper and dancing were the main features. Among those present were:—Mrs. Minna Mays, who wore black panne velvet; Mrs. S. Irwin Crookes, jun., primrose velvet; Mrs. Aircy, figured velvet; Miss Raie Robinson, scarlet lace; Miss Joan Airey, ciel bine marocain; Miss Betty Brambley, black flat crepe; Miss Mary Beck, black panne velvet; Miss Bette Ryan, scarlet marocain; Miss Bunnie Jones, gunmetal taffeta; Miss V. Kissen, flame taffeta; Miss L. Skeels, blue silk; Miss Iwa Pearson, daffodil taffeta; Miss Hogan, azure blue georgette; Miss N. Warren, turquoise marocain; Miss Temple Dewdney, blue and white crepe; Mifes Meara Pearson, flame velvet.

An enjoyable evening was held by the Mothers' Club, Y.W.C.A., during the week to celebrate tile silver weddings of Mr. and Mrs. Morris and Mr. and Mrs. Hoy, also the 55th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Rnnkins' wedding. Games, dancing and competitions were indulged in and items were contributed by the following: Songs, Mrs. Collier; recitation, Miss Phyllis Moore; violin duet, Misses Hyland and Smith; banjo and pianoforte duet, Mrs. Forrest and Mr. Mann; Maori song arid haka, little Betty Collett. During the evening the guests of honour were presented with a gift by Mrs. Dickens on behalf of the members, and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a delightful evening to a close. The usual meeting was held on Tuesday, when Mrs. Dickens presided. Mrs. McConnell was the soloist for the afternoon and tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Forrest, Clark and Rawley.

The Mangere Central Tennis Club held another very successful dance in the Central Hall on Thursday night, when there was a good attendance, in spite of inclement weather. Among those present were: Mrs. W. J. Paul, wife of the presi • dent, in black lace and georgette; Mrs. L. A. Jones,, black chiffon velvet; Mrs. A. S. Kerr, midnight blue ring velvet; Mrs. H. Short, pink georgette; Miss A. Ellett, apricot crushed velvet; Miss I. Montgpmerie, black lace; Miss M. Canham, blue floral organdie; Miss D. Bolton, wine satin; Miss A. Andrews, green velvet; Miss R. Kirbride, amber georgette; Miss P. Kerr, gold satin beaute; Miss M. Steen> white satin; • Miss G. Lees, white satin beaute; Miss M. McFarlane, black lace; Miss I. Gow, white satin; Miss D. Montgomerie, blue lace and georgette; Miss M. Speakman, apricot taffeta and lace; Miss Elsie Short, blue georgette; Miss Gwen Short, black georgette; Miss N.
