ARBOR DAY OBSERVANCE.
BIRKENHEAD PROPOSALS.
The committees within the Nortlicote District High School area are co- [ operating with the Birkenhead Borough iCouncil in making arrangements for the suitable observance of Arbor Day. These bodies are desirous of reviving the former custom of tree planting on this annual occasion, and of giving eficet to the suggestion of the Auckland local bodies and the Education Board of interesting the younger generation in trees. A conference of the chairmen of these committees with the Birkenhead parks committee was held last even inn-. It was decided to invite the Governor-General to plant a tree at a ceremony in the Birkenhead civic reserve on the forenoon of Wednesday, July 12. Lord Bledisloe is also to ba jrequested to address the children of the Birkenhead, Nortlicotc, Birkdale and other schools represented. The shopkeepers will be asked to close for an hour during the function. Tree plantino- will be carried out in various parts of° the borough in the afternoon under the supervision of the school committees.
