DEVONPORT PROTEST.
WOTJXD INCREASE TAXATION. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. H. P. W. Meikle, a resolution protesting against the Government's decision to raise the exchange rate was passed unanimously at last night's meeting of the Devonport Borough Council. The Mayor stated that the adverse affect to the borough would amount in hard cash to approximately £450, which would ihean additional taxation to the already over-burdened ratepayer of oneeighth of a penny in the £. This was the precise percentage of the economies effected during the year by the council, and the higher exchange would nullify all that good work. Several councillors spoke to the motion with considerable feeling, and there was no dissenting voice when the resolution was eventually put.
