HOPES OF SETTLEMENT.
Great hopes of a settlement without any strike were expressed by Mr. Watson, secretary of the union, this morning. He said that already the highest firm in Auckland, Walter Buchanan, Ltd., had agreed to accept the men's proposals. Mr. Watson said that without an award the men in the bakeries would be working automatically . under the Factories Act, and some of the proposals of the employers would be illegal under that Act. It is expected that by tomorrow it will be known definitely whether the ultimatum of the men has been accepted by the employers. A meeting of the executive of the Master Bakers' Association will be held to-morrow afternoon, when the new proposals of the men will be fully considered. One member of the executive said today he did not think for a moment there would be a general strike. Most of the dissatisfaction, he said, was among the men of one particular firm.
