FIRES IN CITY.
SHOPS IN SYMONDS STREET. BENZINE BLAZE IN GARAGE. The City Fire Brigade received a call to an outbreak of Are in a block of shops near the Newton intersectixi at 12.31 p.m. yesterday. Flames and smoke were issuing from the roof of Mrs.- J. Walker's dressmaking factory, which is on the first floor, next to the Haymarket stores. The flames spread to the living quarters of Mr. R. Errington, whose fruit business is directly below. Mr. Errington holds insurance policies for £150 on the contents of his living quarters and £200 on the contents of his shop, both policies being in the Northern Assurance Office. The building itself is the property of Messrs. Hugh Wright. Fumes from the benzine tank on a truck in the garage of Northern Automobiles, Ttd., Albert Street, caught fire a little after 9 o'clock on. Saturday ni«ht. It is considered fortunate that the tank did not catch alight and explode. The city brigade was called, but the employees of the firm managed to put the flames out with a chemical extinguisher. The origin of the outbreak is not known.
