DROWNING FATALITIES

GIRL CARRIED OUT. TAURANGA SURFING ACCIDENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TAURANGA, Saturday. While bathing in thp surf this morning at Mount Maunganui, June Mears, aged 13 years, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Mears, Walton,-was drowned. Members of the life-saving club went out with a reel and attempted a rescue, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The body was-recovered within ten minutes, but artificial respiration proved unavailing. At an inquest held before Mr. A. F. Tunks, a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. The coroner commended the action of Arthur B. Cambie, of Rotorua, who swam out to the rescue without waiting for a lifeline and assisted Vivian L. Gittos in recovering the body. The funeral of the late Miss Mears takes place at Matamata.
