YESTERDAY'S BUSINESS.
SYDNEY, January 20.
On the Sydney Stock Exchange to-day a distinctly firm tone was manifested. Good buying orders for better class shares came from New Zealand, but there was slight irregularity among Commonwealth securities.'
Included in this morning's sales were the following Commonwealth 4 per cent bonds: 1938, £102 10/; 1941, £102 13/9; 1961, £103. Bank of New South Wales, £30 12/6: Broken Hill Proprietary, 27/6; Colonial Sugar, £54 5/; ditto, New Zealand delivery, £54 2/6 and £54; Goldsbrough, Mort, New Zealand delivery, . 25/; Tooth's Brewery, 35/4%.
Closing sales included the following:— Bank of New South Wales, £30 15/; Bank of Australasia, £10 9/; English, Scottish and Australian Bank, New Zealand delivery, 93/; Burns, Philp, 47/6; ditto, New Zealand delivery, 47/3; Colonial Sugar, £54 2/6; ditto, New Zealand delivery, £54 5/, £54 2/6, and £54; Goldsbrough, Mort, 25/1%; ditto. New Zealand delivery, 25/; Australian Glass, 45/9; ditto. New Zealand delivery, 45/9; Huddart-Parker, 30/; British Tobacco, 32/7%; Tooth's Brewery, 35/4%; Electrolytic Zinc, 18/6; New Zealand Insurance, 46/; Australian Gas, A shares, £7 2/; Berlei, 25/; Broken Hill Proprietary, 27/9; North Broken Hill, 71/3.
The Melbourne Exchange was closed, owing to the death of a member, Mr. George Woodforde.
