OUTFIT FOR BABY. MATINEE COAT AND BONNET. (Conducted by TINKERBELL.) Dear Girls, Even in summer little children must be warmly clothed, and the dainty matinee coat and bonnet illustrate-! in this column is just what baby needs these summery days. Ths bonnet measures 10 inches round ih.o face, and to make it you wi!l require one ounce of 2-piy wooi, two No. 9 knitting needles, one yard of narrow ribbon and one yard of 1 J-inch ribbon for strings. Instructions for making this bonnet in a larger size to Sit a baby of one to two 3*ears will be supplied to any Busy Bee who requires them.

Begin on the front: edge. Cast orv 81 stitches and wcrlc two rows plain, working the first rov/ *.nto tite back of stitches to produce a firm edge. Continue in the following pattern:—

First row: Knit 1, make 1 (by placing wool in front of needle as for purling), kail 2, slip 1, kr.it 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over, knit 2, make 1. Repeat these instructions until one stitch is left, then knit 1.

Second row: K.nit plain. Work these two rows four time more (10 rows in all), then purl a row and

knit a row. Repeat from the beginning of the first row or.ee more, after which continue in garter stitch (plain knitting in every row) for two inches. Now shape for crown. First row: Knit together every 7th and Bth stitch. Work four rows plain. Sixth row: Knit together every Sth and 7th stitch. Work four rows plain. Eleventh row: Knit together every sth and 6th stitch. Work four rows plain. Sixteenth row: Knit together every 3rd and 4th stitch. Work four rowe plain. Twenty-first row: Knit together every 2nd and 3rd stitch. Work four rows plain.

Break off wool and, with a darning needle, run through the stitches on needle, draw up and fasten off. Lightly press bonnet on wrong side with a warm ir-n. Sew up the seam as far as the shapings, which begin on the first row of decreasing!.. Pick up the stitches all round neck edge and knit four rows, then cast off. With the narrow ribbon make eight tiny rosettes, each composed of three small loops about a quarter inch deep and two tiny ends. Sew one of these rosettes in the centre of each pattern round the front of the bonnet. Make a rosette at each end of the wider ribbon and sow to the sides of bonnet.

To make , the little matinee coat to match the bonnet you will require three ounces of 2-p'y wool, 2i yards of narrow ribbon, two No. 9 needles, and a fine bone crochet hook.

It will measure 13 inches from tho shoulder and 22 ' inches ail round under the arms.

Make the skirt portion all in one. Cast on 193 stitches and work in the same fancy pattern as for the bsnnet until the skirt measures eight inches after being pressed on the wrong' side. Cast off. For the yoke, begin on the back, cast on 85 stitches and work in plain knitting for 1J inches. 1 hen cast on 40 stitches at beginning of next row for sleeve. Knit into the back of these 40 stitches to tighten. Kr.it to end. Cast on 40 stitches for the other sleeve and kr.it to end. Continue in plain knitting on these 165 stitches until the sleeve edge measures inches. Next row: Knit 67 stitches, cast off 31 for hack of neck and knit to end. Put first set of stitches on to a spare needle and work on last set only. Knit eight rows, then at the neck end cast on 20 stitches and knit plain for another three inches. Cast off 40 at the sleeve end and continue on the remaining stitches for 1 \ inches. Cast off- Return to the ot3-.er set of 67 stitches, join on wool at the neck end and knit to correspond with the other side.

To make up: Sew up the sleeveseams of yoke. Round the edge of sleeves and neck work thus: 1 treble (2 chain, miss 2 stitches of the edge, 1 treble into next stitch). Repeat bracketed instructions. Join yoke to skirt portion, casing the skirt su round to fit the yoke. Press lightly on the wrong side with damp cloih and warm iron. thread ribbon through holes at neck, waist and wrists. This little outfit looks very sweat knitted in cream with tiny pink rosebuds and pink satin ribbon for tha bo-.vs.
