A MALE STRONGHOLD.
The Devonshire Club is the latest stronghold of the male sex to admit women to its membership. Five times in the club's history of 5S years a' proposal to sanction their entrance has been defeated by large majorities. Now, under a restoration scheme which has been started, the ground floor will be devoted almost exclusively to women's entertainment. The club has decided not to move from its site in St. James' Street. A large, new dining room will be provided on the ground floor, with a tastefully decorated lounge. On the first floor the famous private dining room which was the scene of the lunch parties given by Gladstone to further the cause of Home Rule, depicted in Sir Frank Lockwood's recently published sketches, will be restored. The Devonshire Club also owns No. 5, Arlington Street, once famous as the residence of Sir Eobert Walpole after he ceased to be Prime Minister. If the new women's section of the Devonshire proves as popular as is expected, the committee will consider plans to extend it by the adaptation of Walpole's house, at present unoccupied.
