WIN AND PLACE.
NEW BETTING SYSTEM. OPERATED AT TRENTHAM. RESUXrT very satisfactory. (By Telegraph. —Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. ■ The Wellington Racing Club's meetin"', which opened yesterday, provided even wider interest than usual on account of a change in betting airangemente. The win and place system had"been tried out at the Taranaki and Stratford meetings during the holidays with great success, but Trentham provided the first opportunity for sampling the change for many racing men from all parts of the Dominion. The result
was generally considered highly satisfactory, and tlie public appreciated the opportunity of betting separately for a win or place as suited tlieir individual fancy. Facilities were restricted in some respects, but this was to be expected, as the change was made by the club at short notice. The new system is expected to grow in favour a.s backeis become familiar Avith it, and in many cases will this result in wagers being divided, a horse being backed straight out with portion on the place machine as insurance. There were some wide variations in the dividends.
So far the new system has been tried only in' the North Island., but officials of some South Island clubs were present at Trentham watching proceedings, and it is possible a change will be made by the Dunedin Jockey Club and Canterbury Jockey Club next month. With the experience of one day at Trentham, most people are prepared to say win and place system betting has come to stay.
