"BREACH OF FAITH."

MR. COATES CHALLENGED. WORST OF ALL MISTAKES. "I am amazed that Mr. Coates has not resigned also since the decision is a distinct breach of faith with the British delegates to the Ottawa Conference," was the comment made by Mr. R. Semple, M.P. for Wellington East, who was in Auckland to-day. ■'!: "Mr. Stewart's breakaway is 110 surprise," Mr. Semple added. "It has been simmering for a long time. He has been a very unhappy man for a long time. The marvel has been that he lias remained so long with the Coalition. I congratulate the Finance Minister on his courage and I am sure New Zealand will also." The Wellington City Council, of which Mr. Semple is a member, had heavy London loan commitments to meet, and many of them were falling due shortly. The council had struggled to balance its budget, and to meet the increased debt service the high exchange rate would entail would mean an increase in rates, or further wholesale staff dismissals, or both. No Comment. Mr. A. Harris, Coalition-Reform M.P. for Waitemata, said he was not disposed to comment until after the caucus of the party which is to be held on Tuesday.
