CRICKET IN THE AUCKLAND PROVINCE.

After watching the cricket matches played on the Domain during these Christinas holidays, where so many country players are engaged, I am convinced that by no freak of imagination could anyone claim that the Auckland Cricket Association touring team represents all the best cricket talent of the Auckland Province. It certainly does not. It only represents a few clubs about the city, with one outsider, who was selected to fill an important position because there was no city man qualified to fill it. While there are so many country clubs competing on the Domain I suggest the following for their careful consideration, and as a step to overcome the conservative policy of the A.C.A.: That all country and suburban associations combine and form an Auckland Provincial Cricket Association. If the A.C.A. joined with this association, so much the better for the spore of the good old game, but even without the A.C.A. the Provincial Association would be so strong it would command consideration from the New Zealand Cricket Council. With such a strong association of widely-scattered clubs it would require three selectors to pick representative teams — one for the North of Auckland, one for the city and suburbs, and one for the South of Auckland. These selectors should be local residents appointed by the clubs in the districts they represent. To give the selectors an opportunity to see the leading players in action, play an annual match Town versus Country at the end of November or early in December. Wellington gave the other provinces a lead in this direction this season and picked six country plavers for its representative team. A. H. BROWN.
